Seeing with Spiritual Eyes

Do you feel lost in a world where "truth" seems increasingly relative? Where news is labeled "fake" and theories are dismissed as conspiracies? While we live in a truth crisis, there is a foundation we can build our lives upon—God's Word.

The Step of Faith We All Take

Everything we do is a step of faith. When you drive down the highway, is that not a step of faith? When you fly in an airplane? We live our lives on faith.

After decades of following Biblical principles, I've received enough confirmation both in history and experience to give the Bible the benefit of the doubt. It has become the truth foundation of my life, which is why I read it every day without fail—it consistently shows me the way to live.

When God Opens Our Eyes

In Ephesians 1:16-17, Paul prays, "I have not stopped thanking God for you. I pray for you constantly asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God."

This spiritual wisdom and insight manifests in several powerful ways:

Solutions to Life's Problems

Remember Hagar in Genesis 21? Cast out into the desert with her son Ishmael, their water ran out, and she turned away saying, "I cannot watch my boy die." Then Scripture tells us, "God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water." God revealed the solution that was there all along.

Obstacles We Face

In Numbers 22, Balaam couldn't understand why his donkey refused to move forward. "Then the Lord opened Balaam's eyes and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn." God helps us see the obstacles—both physical and spiritual—that we face.

Protection in Dangerous Times

One of my favorite Bible stories involves Elisha and his servant surrounded by an enemy army. The servant panicked, but Elisha prayed, "O Lord, open his eyes so that he may see" (2 Kings 6:17). When God opened the servant's eyes, he saw "hills full of horses and chariots of fire" surrounding them—God's protection was there all along.

God's Presence in Our Journey

On the road to Emmaus, two disciples walked with Jesus without recognizing him. Luke 24:31 tells us, "Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him." You may feel alone, but the truth is God is always walking beside you. He would never leave you.

The Pathway to Deeper Understanding

How do we gain this spiritual insight? The pathway is clear:

Begin a Relationship with Jesus Christ

"The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them because they are spiritually discerned" (1 Corinthians 2:14). Spiritual discernment begins with the Holy Spirit dwelling within you.

Pray for Spiritual Enlightenment

Make it a habit to pray Psalm 119:18 before opening Scripture: "Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law."

Come to the Lord with Humility

"He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way" (Psalm 25:9). If you approach God's Word thinking you already have everything figured out, don't expect to receive much.

Live with Integrity

Jesus said, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God" (Matthew 5:8). While none of us can be perfect, keeping sin and conflict out of your heart creates clarity in your spiritual vision.

Say Yes to God in Advance

"Teach me, O Lord, to follow your decrees and I will keep them to the end. Give me understanding and I will keep your law and obey it with all my heart" (Psalm 119:33-34). Tell God, "Father, show me what you want me to do, and I'll do it."

The Bible wasn't given to make us smart—it was given to transform our hearts and make us alive. James 1:22 reminds us to "not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves, but do what it says."

Any belief system requires some leap of faith. What I've discovered is that trusting in God's Word is the shortest leap of faith we can make. The evidence is substantial, and the personal transformation is undeniable.

I've witnessed countless people who've taken this leap of faith and found it to be the greatest decision they ever made. Will you pray with me today, "Open my eyes, Lord, let me see"? Will you commit to saying, "You just give me the word, Lord, and I'll do it"?

That simple prayer could be the beginning of seeing your life—and truth—through spiritual eyes.

Reflection

  1. In what areas of your life do you need God to "open your eyes" to see his solutions, protection, or presence?

  2. How has God's Word provided you with direction in the past? Can you recall a time when Scripture illuminated a path forward?

  3. Are there obstacles in your spiritual journey that might be blocking your ability to receive spiritual wisdom and insight?

  4. Have you said "yes" to God in advance, committing to follow his direction before knowing what he might ask of you?

Application

Begin today by approaching God's Word with humility and an open heart. Pray Psalm 119:18 before reading Scripture: "Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law." Choose one area of your life where you need divine guidance and search for relevant passages. Remember, spiritual insight comes when we maintain a relationship with Jesus, pray for enlightenment, approach Scripture with humility, live with integrity, and commit to obedience in advance. Make a specific commitment to act on what God reveals to you through his Word today.

Prayer

God, thank you for your Word, which is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. I acknowledge that I need your spiritual wisdom and insight to navigate this world of confusion and relativism. Open my eyes today to see the wonderful truths in your Word. Show me what you want me to do, and I commit in advance to follow your direction. Help me to not merely listen to your Word but to put it into practice. I trust that as I build my life on the foundation of your truth, you will guide me in every decision. In Jesus' name, Amen.
